How to wear Autumn 2021 denim trends

Whilst the death knell has been sound for the much-loved skinny jean, the good news is that denim is more ubiquitous than ever when it comes to trends for Autumn 2021. Personally I’m not feeling ready to squeeze myself into a pair of tailored trousers or a pencil skirt quite yet either, so I’ve also been wearing my jeans into the office as well as at the weekends – and it’s fair to say my denim collection is the one area where my wardrobe is expanding (whereas all of my uncomfortable workwear and more fitted items have made their way to the charity shop).

The trend for jeans this season is very much a straighter leg or a slouchy jean, in keeping with our new found preference for comfort and looser silhouettes.  I’m not quite there with the ‘Dad jean’ yet (and I’m definitely not ready for low-rise), but I’m still loving the Mom jean, especially in a vintage, washed out blue.  I’ll be wearing these V by Very jeans with (a bargain at £22 – they fit SO well) teamed with a tucked-in aran style cream jumper (another wardrobe staple for me) and my slip-on Vans.

One item I hadn’t picked up before now was a pair of black Mom jeans – these are from River Island.  I usually opt for black skinny jeans for dinner or drinks, but I think worn turned-up with a pair of Chelsea boots, a bodysuit and a smart shoulder bag, these are versatile enough to be worn in the evening too (with a leather jacket when it gets a bit cooler).

Finally – I always end up living in my denim jackets as we transition into Autumn weather, especially whilst it’s not showing any signs of cooling down just yet.  They’re so easy to thrown on over a dress or even with leggings or joggers to run to the shops! The ‘boyfriend’ shape is just as big for jackets as it is for jeans this season and I’m loving oversized varsity jackets and trucker style denim jackets.  This cream one from Superdry has that edgy, boxy feel – a light coloured denim jacket is often associated with the Spring season (worn over a floral dress) but I’ll be giving it a bit of edge by wearing it with denim shorts and a statement belt.  I’m definitely not ready to give up my denim shorts or sandals yet – luckily the weather seems to be on my side!

Printed denim is another trend set to be big this season – think floral or retro motifs that can be paired with a plain t-shirt.  I love these Moschino heart print jeans – ticking off the statement pattern style and straight leg fit for maximum style points.
